Russell Crowe has apologised to Ed Sheeran via email after wrongly announcing the singer was engaged to his long-term girlfriend.

In a recent interview on Australian radio show Fitzy And Wippa, The Mummy star mistakenly called Sheeran's girlfriend Cherry Seaborn his fiancee.

At the time, Crowe explained how Sheeran became a house guest at his coastal property in New South Wales while he was on tour in Australia.

"[Ed] was on tour here and he was getting a bit burned out so he came up and stayed at the farm for a couple of days to get some sleep and then we became conversational mates.

"He has subsequently gone back to the farm with his fiancée for more time."

Ed Sheeran has denied claims he is engaged to his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn

Sheeran has since responded to the claims on the same radio show and insisted he isn't gearing up to walk down the aisle.

"He (Crowe) emailed me about it to say sorry".

He’s only met Cherry once and I didn’t introduce her, I didn’t say anything... I think he just assumed, but no – we’re not engaged."

26-year-old Sheeran started dating the hockey player, who he first met in school, back in 2015.

He previously admitted he and Seaborn are "on the path" to marriage but they have no plans to tie the knot just yet.

"I am not getting married soon. People just keep asking me about it. I would like to get married eventually, but it’s not impending," he told ET online.

"I don’t think you get normality from the wrong marriage, you get normality from the right marriage, the right friends and the right environment - and I think I am on a really good path to all three."

Sheeran is currently on the South American leg of his world tour and is set to play the Esplanada Do Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on Tuesday night.
