Singer Cliff Richard and South Yorkshire Police have settled the legal fight over reports naming him as a suspected sex offender.

The BBC reports that 76-year-old Richard had sought damages from the force, and the BBC, over media coverage of a police raid on his home in 2014.

He was investigated over historical sexual assault allegations, which he denied. The case was dropped last year.

South Yorkshire Police had already apologised "wholeheartedly for the additional anxiety caused". Last June, the BBC apologised to the singer for the emotional distress it had caused him over their reporting of the case.

Last November, Richard revealed that he wept when he learned that he had no case to answer to the British Crown Prosecution Service over allegations of historical sexual abuse.

The singer was never arrested or charged and the case was discontinued by the CPS in June 2016 on the grounds of insufficient evidence.

Richard told the Mail on Sunday late last year: "It was another worst moment really, the last five minutes before I was given the news that the enquiry was all over. Waiting for that conference call with my lawyer."

He said he was at his 30-acre estate on Portugal’s Algarve when he heard the news.

Cliff Richard: "My life was effectively turned upside down."

Richard announced last July that he was suing both South Yorkshire Police and the BBC for damages and loss of earnings over their `flagrant disregard' for his privacy'.

On his official website, Richard said: "My life was effectively turned upside down, and my reputation, worldwide, was unnecessarily damaged.

"In the absence of satisfactory answers, a court will determine whether or not their behaviour was justified and proportionate. I would not want the same to happen to others whether in the public eye or not."
