Jimmy Kimmel has joked about returning to host the 2018 Oscars ceremony, alluding to the infamous mix up from this year's ceremony.

While thanking The Academy for the invite to host for a second time, the talk show host and comedian referred to the gaffe in which La La Land was mistakenly named Best Picture instead of Moonlight, saying he hoped he had "opened the right envelope".

Despite the unprecedented drama and confusion at the 2017 ceremony, Kimmel will return to the stage at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre for the 90th Academy Awards on March 4 next year.

"Hosting the Oscars was a highlight of my career and I am grateful to Cheryl, Dawn (Hudson, chief executive of the Academy) and the Academy for asking me to return to work with two of my favourite people, Mike De Luca and Jennifer Todd", Kimmel said in a statement, before adding jokingly.

"If you think we screwed up the ending this year, wait until you see what we have planned for the 90th anniversary show!

No host has taken the helm of the Oscars in back-to-back years since Billy Crystal in 1997 to 1998.

Producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd, who oversaw the 2017 ceremony, will also return for next year's 90th anniversary run.
