Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has joked about Chris Pratt's diva-ish ways on set and he explains how the Hollywood star has become one of his best friends.

The 46-year-old screenwriter initially cast doubt on whether Pratt would be a suitable candidate to play the iconic part of Star-Lord in the movie's first outing in 2014 and had to be convinced by studio executives to let him audition.

As the well known story goes, Pratt nailed the audition in 30 seconds flat, and went on to help Marvel break box-office records.

Gunn admits he counts his blessings everyday for being introduced to the 37-year-old actor and says he holds a special place in his heart for him.

Gunn - "I think we've both been very fortunate and we are both aware of that

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment about working with Pratt for a second time, Gunn joked that the star isn't as perfect as he seems.

"He was a diva. He was just a monster the whole time. He treated people terribly," Gunn laughed.

"No!," Gunn said with a smile. "Chris is one of my best friends in the world."

"I am honestly incredibly grateful for him. Every day I thank God that I have somebody who I care about so much that is working beside me."

"I think we've both been very fortunate and we are both aware of that, and it makes the movie making process a whole lot easier," he added.

The highly-anticipated Vol. 2 hits cinemas on April 28 and Gunn says he is excited for fans to find out what Baby Groot and the gang get up to next.

"I love these characters. They are very close to me. To be able to get to know them better and to be able to share more things that I know about them with the fans is a really fun part of making these movies," he said.

"I make these movies because I love these characters," Gunn added.

They're back with a bang!
