Scottish viewers have been given a friendly warning about "addictive Irish charm" as RTÉ soap Fair City made its debut on new Scottish channel STV2 on Tuesday evening.

The popular Irish drama, which has run on RTÉ since 1989, is one of the centrepiece dramas on STV2, and just before its debut, the channel told its viewers "be careful; with all that Irish charm, it could be addictive!"

The Scottish broadcaster, which launched yesterday, has acquired 400 episodes of the show with RTÉ also producing an additional 30-minute documentary of "the story so far", which was broadcast ahead of the soap to familiarise Scottish viewers with key characters and storylines.

Then the series will start on Episode One of Season 26, which was shown in Ireland on Christmas Eve 2014.

In a press release on their website, STV2 said: "The fictional district of Carrigstown in Dublin is home to Ireland's most popular drama series, Fair City. Now Fair City is coming to Scotland's new TV channel, STV2, and, like every good soap, it has a host of colourful characters.

"Why is everything so difficult for Paul and Niamh? Why are Yvonne and Carol rivals in love and life? What lies in store for Dolores and Pete? And where is Vino's Tapas Bar or McCoys, the local pub?

"Find out when Fair City begins on Tuesday April 25 at 6.30pm. But be careful; with all that Irish charm, it could be addictive!"

Fair City was also aired on the Tara Television network in the UK via cable and Sky Digital from 1997 until the closure of the station in 2002

The RTÉ soap follows Irish TV shows such as Can't Cope Won't Cope, which has been acquired by digital channel BBC Three, Love/Hate, which was also shown on Scottish TV as well as Channel 5 in the UK, and RTÉ comedy Bridget and Eamon, which aired on UK Gold.

TV3 soap Red Rock was also shown as part of BBC1’s afternoon schedule.
