Star Wars director Rian Johnson has warned that The Last Jedi won't be a happy watch, insisting "things are going to get dire".

During The Last Jedi panel at Star Wars Celebration in Florida, the writer/director revealed where The First Order are at in The Last Jedi, following the destruction of their Starkiller Base at the end of The Force Awakens.

"Starkiller Base, big loss, but they did manage to take out the seat of the Republic and that's thrown the galaxy into chaos," he said.

"The First Order are jumping on that at the beginning of our movie, very aggressively, not sitting on their hands, they're making some big moves at the start of our film.

Johnson warned fans it wont be a happy watch

"So things are going to get dire."

Fear not though, as at least we had the first trailer for The Last Jedi to distract us from Johnson's ominous warning, although Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) delivered one of his own in that.

"I only know one truth… It's time for the Jedi to end," he says as the trailer comes to an end, one of several moments that gave fans chills from the first look at the highly-anticipated sequel.

The Last Jedi panel might not have revealed much, but we did at least find out more about new character Rose, played by Kelly Marie Tran.

Daisy Ridley also teased Rey's relationship with Luke in the film, while John Boyega gave a hint of Finn's journey.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is released on December 15.
