Sleeping with the Enemy star Patrick Bergin says that he's relishing the chance to bring some "danger" and "mystique" to Red Rock when he debuts on the TV3 soap on Monday night.
The Dublin actor will play Jim Tierney, the grandfather of Detective Rory Walsh. “I’m a big fan of Red Rock so it’s a massive privilege to have a character created for me," says Bergin, who attended the IFTA awards in Dublin on Saturday night.
Tierney is alienated from and cynical about the modern world, preferring to spend his time painting model aeroplanes. He is constantly the object of attacks by local youths, who target him because of his age, even though he is in fact a very fit man.

He is Rory’s only relative and is very proud to have a detective for a grandson. However, Jim has a chequered past in the shape of a dark secret that still casts a shadow. It torments him that his past even burdens his grandson, who will take dangerous risks to ensure his grandfather’s secret remains unspoken.
"I’m looking forward to bringing some danger and mystique to Red Rock," Bergin says. "What’s even nicer is we’re filming just down the road from where I grew up, so it’s good to be home.”
Chris Newman, who plays Rory Walsh, says he is chuffed to be working with the distinguished actor. "Patrick Bergin is an acting legend so it's an honour to watch him work and learn from him everyday."
Bergin came to international prominence in the 1991 thriller Sleeping With The Enemy, in which he played Julia Roberts' sinister husband. He also starred with Harrison Ford in Patriot Games.
Bergin has been seen in over 80 film and TV movies in all, perhaps best known internationally as the sinister husband of Julia Roberts' character in Sleeping with the Enemy in which he played Irish terrorist Kevin O'Donnell.
He also appeared as Robin Hood opposite Uma Thurman in a 1991 TV movie about the legendary outlaw of Nottingham forest.
Bergin also portrayed a Provisional IRA gunman in Jonny Was, which co-starred Vinnie Jones and Roger Daltrey.
In terms of more recent screen work, he plays the role of Howie alongside Cillian Murphy and Jack Reynor in the Ben Wheatley-directed Free Fire, currently in cinemas nationwide.
Red Rock airs on Monday April 10 at 9.00pm.
