Pierce Brosnan has opened up about coping with the loss of his first wife and daughter, saying "the Irish black dog" sits beside him from time to time.

The Louth-born actor was married to Australian actress Cassandra Harris for 11 years before she died in 1991 to Ovarian cancer aged 43. They have a son together, Sean, and he adopted her two children Charlotte and Christopher.

In 2013, their daughter Charlotte died from the same disease as her mother aged 42.

In an interview with Esquire magazine, the 63-year-old James Bond star discussed how he has been affected by their untimely deaths.

"I don’t look at the cup as half full, believe me. The dark, melancholy Irish black dog sits beside me from time to time", he said.

Brosnan married television personality and environmental activist Keely Shaye Smith in 2001 and they have two children together, 20-year-old Dylan and 16-year-old Paris.

The actor revealed his days are full but in a "leisurely sort of way". He splits his time between their two houses in Malibu and Hawaii.

"My days are full in a leisurely sort of way. This morning I worked out, read The New York Times, enjoyed watching my wife in the editing room", he said.

"You don't need a big home. You need a good table to sit at, a good bed to sleep in, a view, and a great bottle of wine."
