Speculation is growing among Ed Sheeran fans that the hitmaker could be about to drop a brand new album.

It's a year to the day since the singer-songwriter announced that he would be taking a break from social media.

However Sheeran has now mysteriously changed his Twitter and Instagram profiles to a simple blue background, prompting suspicion that he is gearing up for the release of his third album.

Writing on his Instagram account a year ago, the singer explained he was "taking the opportunity of not having to be anywhere . . . to travel the world".

At the time he told fans that his third album is "on its way" and is "the best thing I have made thus far".

He has just finished a gruelling world tour of his second album in Auckland, New Zealand. Before the final show, he also tweeted that he was "buggering off for a while" but would see everyone "next Autumn".

Songwriter Amy Wadge, who worked with Ed on some of the new tracks told the BBC that he will "break the internet" when his new album is released.

Wadge, who worked with Ed on the X Factor winner's single, said that "all of this year he's been preparing for his next album".

His last album x, which was released in 2014, spent sixteen weeks at the top of the Irish charts and sold well in excess of 150,000 copies here alone and was certified ten times platinum.

The honorary Irishman showed his love for Ireland again recently by donning a green and white GAAGO jersey in the new Bridget Jones's Baby movie. The scenes were shot at his two sold-out Croke Park gigs in July 2015.

Today's developments on his social media accounts have driven fans into a frenzy as speculation grows that he's about to release new music.
