A couple who survived the trauma of homelessness and other personal challenges got the ultimate happy ending after they got engaged live on RTÉ television.

Sarah Jane Gibson went into shock saying "Are you having a laugh?" after her boyfriend of two years, Ian Colton, proposed to her live on Today with Maura and Dáithí.

It was a Christmas dream come true for the happy couple who had joined Maura and Dáithí to talk about their relationship, which has been tested by many trials and tribulations.

Together they have overcome being homeless, plus a host of other challenges including cheating and comfort eating, and have lost an incredible 11 stone between them.

They told their moving story on the RTÉ One show before Ian surprised Sarah Jane by going down on one knee.

Her priceless initial reaction was: "Are you messing...are you having a laugh!"

An emotional Ian said "will you marry me", while Sarah Jane said "oh my God" repeatedly, adding "this is a wind-up!"

After the proposal Ian said: “I'm so delighted that Sarah Jane said yes! I've been dreaming of asking her to marry me for a long time.

"It was nerve wrecking to do it on live TV, but I wanted to tell the world I love her and what better way than by proposing than on the Today with Maura and Dáithi show!"”

His bride-to-be Sarah Jane added: "I am in shock, I was not expecting this at all! I am so happy"
