Peter Capaldi has been asked to stay on as Doctor Who – but the Scottish actor has yet to make up his mind on the offer.

In an interview with Wales Online, Capaldi insisted that he still hasn't made up his mind whether he'll be following showrunner Steven Moffat out the door.

Moffat will pass the TARDIS on to new boss Chris Chibnall after the legendary sci-fi show's upcoming 10th season. But there's a reasonable chance that the 2017 run will also be Capaldi's last.

"I've been asked to stay on [for season 11]," he said. "I haven't made my mind up about that yet, mainly because I don't want to have to make that decision. I'm trying to avoid it!"

He also said that "Doctor Who does take a lot of time, but it's a wonderful use of it", noting that the ultimate decision on whether or not he stays will depend on "how good a time" he was having.

"It's special," he added. "I'm lucky enough to be in touch with other Doctors, and we all agree how extraordinary it is to be in this position. To decide to leave is a tough decision for everybody.

On the subject of leaving, he referred to departing showrunner Steven Moffatt, who – like Capaldi – has been a lifelong fan. He said it "was very tough for Steven, so I'm just putting it off for as long as possible."

Capaldi has played in the role of the Doctor Who since 2014, said that playing the part is "delightful", although he admitted that it makes his personal life "more complicated".

"I was happy with my life [before]," he said. "I'd been very blessed already and there are things about doing the show that make life more complicated - certainly, being so visible is a new and different way to be.

"[But] it's so delightful to be in this position. People aren't really seeing me anymore. They see Doctor Who, so it's a fantastic place to be. It's also finite, so I'm enjoying as it unfolds."

The festive special episode of Doctor Who will air on BBC One on Christmas Day at 5.45pm. The tenth season follows in the New Year, with Pearl Mackie joining the show as the Doctor's new companion, Bill Potts.
