Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan was among the winners at the British Independent Film Awards in London on Sunday night, but there was disappointment for Michael Fassbender and Jamie Dornan.

Dubliner Ryan won the Outstanding Achievement in Craft award for his work on director Andrea Arnold's road movie odyssey American Honey. It was his first win at the awards, having been nominated four times since 2009.

Kerry actor Fassbender had been nominated for Best Actor for his performance opposite Brendan Gleeson in crime drama Trespass Against Us but lost out to Dave Johns for his work in the Ken Loach film I, Daniel Blake.

Co Down-born Dornan had been nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance opposite Cillian Murphy in WWII true story Anthropoid, but the award went to Brett Goldstein for his performance in Adult Life Skills.

There was strong Irish representation across the various award categories this year. Cork director Billy O'Brien was nominated alongside his co-writer Christopher Hyde for the screenplay to O'Brien's supernatural thriller I Am Not a Serial Killer.
