Campaign underway to get Terry Wogan to Xmas No. 1

Could Terry Wogan make it to the top of the music charts for Christmas?
Could Terry Wogan make it to the top of the music charts for Christmas?

A new online campaign has been launched, which if successful, would see Terry Wogan top of the music charts in time to claim the coveted Christmas Number One spot.

The broadcaster, who died this year following a battle with cancer, released a version of the English folk song The Floral Dance in 1978, which much to his surprise, reached number 21 in the UK charts.

Now a Facebook page with the snappy title of Campaign to get Terry's The Floral Dance to this year's Official Christmas Number One song has been set up to try and ensure he makes it all the way to the top this time.

They are urging fans to download the song from mid December when the official Christmas charts are compiled. Wogan famously sang the song live on Top of the Pops and could barely contain his amusement throughout.

The campaign has already received the backing on Chris Evans. The presenter took over from Terry on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show and today gave the record a spin on the show.

Over 26,000 people have already backed the online campaign which began after the song wasn't chosen as this year's Children In Need single, an event which Wogan hosted from its inception in 1980 to 2014.

Contenders for the Christmas Number One include One Day I'll Fly Away by Vaults, the re-release of It's Better To Dream by Cliff Richard or of course the single from the X Factor winner which this year is rumoured to have been written by Ed Sheeran.
