Lady Gaga has come out in support of Kanye West after he cancelled the remainder of his Saint Pablo tour was placed under observation for exhaustion at a Los Angeles hospital.

The rapper was reportedly hospitalised "for his own health and safety" on Monday after suffering from what was described as "severe sleep deprivation".

Despite a rocky history between the two performers, Gaga shared several messages of support for West on Twitter.

"It's not funny to joke about anyone's possible or not possible mental illness, this is a sensitive time for many. Let's be kind & loving,” she wrote. .

She added that "While I don't agree with everything he does I hope the public shows compassion".

Gaga then tweeted at West: "I support & love u brother, I see in you bravery & courage to stop this tour & take care of YOU. You are a GREAT artist."

Gaga and West had planned to tour jointly several years ago, however after West crashed Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV VMAs in 2009 it was announced that the tour would no longer be going ahead.

Initially Lady Gaga defended him saying that he was "a pioneer in hip-hop music, and he changed what hip-hop music means" and said that "he made a mistake, and he knows it". However following the outcry over the incident the tour was swiftly cancelled.

West was hospitalised for 'exhaustion', a day after cancelling his tour following a bizarre rant on stage.

He was due to play a gig in LA as part of his Saint Pablo Tour on Sunday, however less than three hours before it began the venue sent out a tweet to say the show was being scrapped and that ticket-holders should seek a refund.

It came just a day after he began a show 90 minutes late but then stopped the gig after just three songs after launching into a bizarre tirade, with some colourful language, against the likes of Beyoncé and Hillary Clinton on stage.

The increasingly bizarre behaviour came after he faced widespread condemnation after telling an audience last week that he did not vote in the recent election, but would have chosen Trump if he had cast his ballot.
