Brad Pitt has been cleared of child abuse allegations by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services and the case has now been closed following weeks of extensive interviews.
The 52-year-old actor was accused of striking his 15-year-old son Maddox on board a private jet in late September while under the influence of alcohol.
The alleged incident happened days before the actor’s wife Angelina Jolie Pitt filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the breakup.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that it has been decided that Pitt had not physically or emotionally harmed Maddox when they allegedly got into a dispute on the plane.
Shortly after the news broke that Pitt had been cleared of charges, a representative for 41-year-old Jolie issued a statement saying the actress had to ''take action'' against Pitt.
''Angelina said from the beginning that she felt she had to take action for the health of the family and is relieved that after their 8-week involvement, the DCFS is now satisfied the safeguards are put in place that will allow the children to heal," her representative said in a statement to TMZ.
The spokesperson also confirmed the former couple have both signed an agreement which sees the Jolie retain primary custody of the children - Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and eight-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne - with Pitt receiving supervised visits.
Now that the DCFS investigation is closed, the former Hollywood couple will have to battle it out in court if they can't come to an agreement privately.
Pitt, who is currently promoting his new WWII drama Allied, took to the red carpet for the first time since his split from Jolie last night.
He was joined by his co-star Marion Cotillard at the Los Angeles premiere and reportedly spent a lot of time signing autographs for fans.
Speaking to E! News he thanked fans for their support, saying: "It's really sweet, everyone has been really kind out here. It's really nice to have all the support."
Allied arrives in cinemas nationwide from November 25.
