Hugh Grant has described winning an acting award was a 'novelty' as he was honoured last night at the Hollywood Film Awards, hosted at the Beverly Hilton Hotel by James Corden.
The 56-year-old British star received the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award for his role in Florence Foster Jenkins, in which he starred opposite Meryl Streep.
A host of A-list names attended the ceremony - one of the first award shows of the season - including Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Speaking on the red carpet, Grant said: "I haven't had very many prizes at all in my life so I'm very pleased to be here. This is a novelty.
"I don't know anything about the awards season. I'm a complete neophyte, beginner."
Grant was presented with his award by Andie MacDowell, who was his co-star in Four Weddings And a Funeral, one of the big hits of the 1990s.
Eddie Murphy received the Hollywood career achievement award in recognition of his film career, following starring roles in Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours and more recently as the voice of Donkey in the Shrek movies.
"You feel like you're getting older," the 53-year-old said of his award. "No one in their 20s ever got the career achievement award.
"It's a nice thing when people say nice things about you and acknowledge your work."
Natalie Portman picked up the Hollywood Actress Award for her portrayal of former US first lady Jackie Kennedy in the film Jackie.
She said: "The film is about a woman I deeply admire and have grown to love through considering her life and what she did and accomplished.
"I would watch videos of her White House tour and listen to the tapes of her talking to get the voice right. I read 12 biographies to try and get as many details as I could about the things she lived."
Nicole Kidman won the Hollywood Supporting Actress Award for her role in Lion. She plays a real-life mother whose adopted son uses Google Earth to locate his original home in India.
She said on the red carpet: "To win something for this film is so beautiful . . . because I'm accepting it on behalf of myself but also Sue (Brierley), who I play.
"I think she's extraordinary. What she did and the message she gives about unconditional love and being a mother and how it takes a village to raise children."
Other award winners included Tom Hanks, who honoured with the Hollywood Actor Award for his role in Sully, while Mel Gibson received the Hollywood Director Award for his World War Two drama Hacksaw Ridge. Robert De Niro picked up the Hollywood comedy award for his film The Comedian.
