Jennifer Lopez is set to play the role of Rosie in NBC's live holiday musical production of Bye Bye Birdie, which will air in 2017.
Based on the eponymous 1960 Broadway musical, NBC's Bye Bye Birdie Live! follows the fortunes of music agent Albert Peterson and his girlfriend Rosie during rock 'n roll star Conrad Birdie's visit to Sweet Apple, Ohio before being drafted into the Army. The original story was inspired by Elvis Presley 1957 draft call when the entertainer left show-business to serve in the US army.
Presley received his draft notice for a two-year term, as fans sent tens of thousands of letters to the army asking for his draft to be deferred. The singer duly completed work on his movie King Creole before he was sworn in as an army private in Memphis on March 24, 1958. After six months training, Presley sailed to Europe and for the next 18 months, he served in Friedberg, Germany, where he attained the rank of sergeant.
The original Broadway production of Bye Bye Birdie starred Dick Van Dyke as Albert and Chita Rivera as Rosie. Lopez will serve as an executive producer on Bye Bye Birdie Live!,
"She came to us and said, 'I love this movie and I'd love to do it,'" NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Grenblatt recently revealed.
Lopez has regularly performed a number from the musical, entitled Lot of Livin' To Do during her Las Vegas residency.
"Broadway musicals and films fuelled my childhood and Bye Bye Birdie was one of my favourites," Lopez said in a statement, as reported by Deadline.
"I'm proud to be a part of the NBC family with Shades of Blue and I thought it would be a blast to take on one of their big live musicals."
Bye Bye Birdie Live! is the fifth live musical production for NBC.
The network previously aired The Sound of Music Live! with Carrie Underwood, Peter Pan, The Wiz Live! and the forthcoming Hairspray Live! which will star Jennifer Hudson and Harvey Fierstein.
