After much speculation, singer Robbie Williams has confirmed that he will play at Dublin's Aviva Stadium next June.

He made the announcement of his June 17 Aviva concert at a press conference in Dublin on Friday afternoon.

The solo star and Take That favourite has been a regular visitor to Ireland over the years with previous shows taking place at the Phoenix Park, Croke Park, Slane, the Aviva and the Point/O2  - now the 3Arena.

He told reporters that playing Slane and the Phoenix Park were among the highlights of his career.

"I've done alright in quite a few countries but people seem to have taken me to their hearts in this country more than most. There's definitely a kinship I have with people here. I'm a Farrell - I'm half Farrell!," he said, referring to his mother Janet's maiden name.

Williams, whose new album The Heavy Entertainment Show is out next month, admitted that he hadn't given much thought to his upcoming stadium shows yet. The Dublin show on Saturday June 17 is the first to be announced with tickets going on sale on Friday November 11.

"I'll be doing singing," he continued. "You'll recognise some of the songs. I'll be dancing like a drunk dad at a wedding."

"The audience does 80 per cent of the work for me - especially here," he added.

On the subject of reuniting again with his former Take That bandmates, Williams said they had hoped to get back together next year but their "diaries couldn't combine". Take That, minus Williams, will play the 3Arena on May 15 and 16 next year.

"In the future we shall ride again, but right now I'm busy with my solo stuff," he said.

Answering his final question at the press conference, Williams revealed that he and wife Ayda Field are trying for their third child.
