Actor and musician Donald Glover has been cast as Landro Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars spin-off.

The Atlanta and Community star joins Alden Ehrenreich, who was previously cast as Han Solo, in the movie which will explore the iconic characters' early lives. It is scheduled for release in May 2018.

The new film from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will depict Landro in his formative years as a "scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy's underworld", years before the events involving Han, Leia and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

The directors said in a statement: "We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations.

"Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever."

The role of Landro was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in The Empire Strikes Back. He is the head of Cloud City, a floating city above the planet Bespin and is shown to have a strained friendship with Han Solo, having lost the starship Millennium Falcon to the smuggler and future Rebel commander in a card game.

The upcoming young Han Solo spin-off, which is currently untitled, will explore a previously unseen side of Calrissian.

Glover is best known for his role in Dan Harmon's sitcom Community, releasing Grammy-nominated music as Childish Gambino, and for creating and starring in the FX series Atlanta.
