Benedict Cumberbatch has spoken out about a recent interview in which he says the journalist "tried to make something sensational" out of a quote he gave about the end of Sherlock after the upcoming fourth series.

The actor says that the quote led to multiple outlets reporting that he said the end of the popular BBC drama was nigh, whereas what he actually said was "it was the last one, for now".

Speaking to the Associated Press during a promo tour for his new Marvel film Doctor Strange, he said the journalist had tried to create "click-bait" through the quote which was a "complete distortion" of what he actually said.

"We love doing the show and all I'll say about it is that we're all very busy, we're all doing other things now and you have to see the fourth season to realise why, for now, it's not going to happen again in the same regularity that it has been happening," he said.

"But we'll see, we'll never say never and when it's right, and if it's right, we'll do more.

"And I'm not going to make an announcement through a magazine that we're not going to do any more of that show, it's not my responsibility to do that."

Cumberbatch added: "That was a bit of irresponsible journalism."

Sherlock's fourth season is expected to return in early 2017 on BBC One.
