Comedian Jason Byrne’s memoir, Adventures of a Wonky-Eyed Boy, detailing the childhood adventures of an accident-prone youngster in 1970s and 1980s suburban Dublin, has just been published.
‘“Mrs Byrne, you’ve a beautiful, very pale, ginger-haired baby boy with a wonky eye.” As she was handed me by the midwife, my mother wept for all the wrong reasons. She could have shagged a platypus and I still would have come out better than this.’
Thus begins the new memoir from comedian Jason Byrne, who has travelled far despite the ocular situation of the title, having performed in New York, Boston, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brussels, Milan, Paris and Australia.
“When you read this you’ll realise Jason might actually be the normal one in his family,” declares John Bishop endorsing Byrne's decidedly self-deprecating tone. Aside from his appearances on the John Bishop Show on BBC One, the comedian's numerous television credits include The Graham Norton Show, Live at the Apollo (BBC One), Sky 1’s Wild Things, TV3’s Snaptastic and RTÉ2’s Anonymous.
The Dubliner has hosted three series of The Jason Byrne Show on BBC Radio 2 for which he won the Sony Radio Gold Award for Best Comedy in 2011.
Actress Amy Huberman is also a fan of Byrne’s new memoir about which she enthuses: "I loved this book so much I wanted to cover it in wallpaper and write to all my pen pals about it."
Adventures of a Wonky-Eyed Boy, which features illustrations by Nicky Phelan, is published by Gill Books.
