Actor Michael Peña has said he received short shrift from director John Michael McDonagh when he suggested improvising lines during filming on War on Everyone.
The latest film from the Calvary and The Guard writer/director is set in New Mexico and sees Peña and co-star Alexander Skarsgård play two crooked cops.
Despite the freewheeling banter on screen, the actor told RTÉ Entertainment that none of the lines were improvised as McDonagh was keen on the pair sticking to very much to the script.
According to Peña the response to his improv suggestion was, "He said 'Well if you think you can write something better than my lines, yeah' and then you're like 'oh s***' and it sets the tone of what you can do."

Despite the cliché that all visiting actors must praise the taste of Guinness, it seems that the Ant-man actor really is a fan of the black stuff.
Peña travelled to Ireland in 2011 to attend the wedding of That 70s Show star Danny Masterson, which was held in a private castle in Co. Tipperary, and Peña couldn't get enough of it.
"My friend got married close to Tipperary and I normally don't drink that often, but I drank all day – Guinness, like it was going out of style, like I needed it," Peña told RTÉ Entertainment.

Peña was being interviewed with his War on Everyone co-star Alexander Skarsgård the day after the film's London premiere, and the Legend of Tarzan star credited a pint of Guinness with curing him of his hangover.
"We had the London premiere yesterday, three actually, kind of a pub crawl, or cinema crawl... Premiere crawl," Skarsgård said. "I felt like s*** and then I got here and they gave me a Guinness... It was so good. It's so creamy and smooth, just what you need."
War on Everyone hits cinemas on October 6.
