Actor Michael Peña has slammed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and has said that even if he does win the race to the White House, "science" will deny him the title.

Speaking on Friday night's Late Late Show, Peña said: "You know what's funny? A lot of Americans don't really leave the country. I remember we did something in France and they're laughing at me because he's even nominated.

"Hillary Clinton said to Trump, `You haven't paid any federal taxes. How can you do that?' and he said, `That makes me smart.' And an hour later he was quoted as saying not paying taxes made him smart and he said, `I never said that.' Oh my god! You literally said it an hour ago!"

"This guy just lies to no avail. And they're neck and neck and I have to admit that I'm surprised because it's slightly embarrassing. He has zero experience as well. I think that if he does win, there will be some `science' that comes about, some `recounts' and they'll make it `fair' and all of a sudden Hillary Clinton will become President."

The actor appeared on the Late Late with his co-star Alexander Skarsgård Irish director John Michael McDonagh to talk about their new movie, War on Everyone, which is in cinemas now.

McDonagh, who directed The Guard and Calvary, has re-located from the West of Ireland to New Mexico for the "jet black comedy."

War on Everyone tells the story of Terry Monroe (Skarsgård) and Bob Bolaño (Peña), two corrupt Albuquerque cops who appear to have picked the wrong person to victimise.

The cast also includes Theo James (the Divergent series), Tessa Thompson (Creed), Paul Reiser (Mad About You) and Irish actor David Wilmot, who appeared in both Calvary and The Guard.
