No piece of cake. Bake Off hopeful 'runs out of lives'

The latest hopeful to be eliminated from The Great British Bake Off has said they felt like "a cat that was running out of its lives" on the hit show.

Rav Bansal, who had previously earned praise from the judges for his fusions and flavours, is the sixth contestant to leave the kitchen.

Rav - "I was so proud to get past the halfway mark"

The university support worker didn't bloom during Botanical Week, however, with his margherita meringue pie and blossom cake lacking flour power.

"I was so proud to get past the halfway mark, my biggest fear was getting kicked out first, and I did feel like a cat that was running out of its lives," he said.

"All the way through, whenever I was doing badly, I somehow managed to pull it back. It was an up and down ride, but I went out with a smile on my face."

This week's show saw the bakers given three all-new challenges: a citrus meringue pie for the Signature Bake, fougasse bread in the Technical category and a floral cake of at least three tiers for the Showstopper.

Judge Paul Hollywood said Bansal's pie was "too soft" and lacking strong flavour.

His fougasse won third place, but his blossom cake was deemed "a bit samey" by Hollywood, while fellow judge Mary Berry said it lacked creativity.

"Piping your own flowers was difficult and I have always been open that my bakes are not pretty," said Bansal.

"I would rather they taste good than look good, so I think that was my ultimate downfall."

However, he described the BBC One show as the "best experience" of his life and said he would keep experimenting.

"For now, I am just going to go with the flow," he said. "One of my biggest dreams is to write a cookbook, and maybe even open my own bakery - that's the ultimate goal."

Tom Gilliford was this week's Star Baker. Next week is Dessert Week on the show.
