Poldark star Aidan Turner used his time on the red carpet at the GQ Awards in London to share his love for his mother Eileen, saying she is "the number one" in his life.

The Dubliner, who was named Best Television Actor at the awards on Tuesday night, told reporters that Eileen - oddly enough - doesn't like him smoking.

"I do, at the odd moment, take a cigarette," he confessed.

"I shouldn't do that but it's probably the last of my really bad habits. My mum is not impressed with that at all."

The 33-year-old said he has to text his mother if he is out for the night in Dublin and will be late home.

"If I'm staying over I send her a text always," he continued. "I didn't do that when I was younger... I'm a very good boy. I behave myself.

"My mum's the number one in my life. I make sure she's looked after. I would never worry her."

Turner said his mother was "really proud" of his work on Poldark but added that she also loved the 1970s version of the show.

When asked about his adoring female public, Turner said there is no one screaming his name.

"No never, what the hell is going on? It never happens!" he joked.
