Aidan Turner has confessed to being the brains behind his famous topless scene in BBC's Poldark.

The 33-year-old actor Dubliner raised his heartthrob status when he flaunted his honed physique in several episodes of the first series of the period drama - with his topless scything scene in season one particularly memorable for many.

However, Turner has now admitted that the infamous scene was dreamed up by him and admits it was never supposed to be sexy.

"It was never in the script that he takes his top off – it just made sense to me," he told Radio Times magazine. "That’s the worst thing about it. It was my bl**dy idea."

Turner, who played Cornish mine owner Ross Poldark in the BBC’s adaptation of Winston Graham’s novels, says he is looking forward to the second series of the show returning in September.

“It was lovely to come back knowing that the first series went out and it was popular, it’s a real morale booster on set,” he said.

“It’s also very flattering because we all worked really hard on the first series and it seems like it has paid off.

“It’s great because we enjoy doing what we do and we want the show to continue. There is so much more of this story to tell so it kind of needed to be a hit!”

Poldark returns to BBC One on September 4.
