Dallas icon Linda Gray has joined the cast of Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks.

The 75-year-old, best known for her role as Sue Ellen in Dallas, will play Tabitha, the mother of Marnie Nightingale (Lysette Anthony).

She said she was moving "from one iconic series to another" and promised Tabitha would "whip up a storm" in Chester when she's reunited with Marnie.

Gray played former beauty queen Sue Ellen, the long-suffering, vodka-swilling wife of oily oil baron JR Ewing, from 1978 until 1989 and was also part of the Dallas reboot which ran from 2012 until 2014.

The actress won rave reviews for playing Mrs Robinson in The Graduate on the London stage and, interestingly, Gray's legs - and not Anne Bancroft's - featured in the poster for the original movie of The Graduate in 1967.

"When we came to discuss who could possibly play Marnie's mother the list was very small," said Hollyoaks boss Bryan Kirkwood.

Gray will make her debut on the show in the autumn.
