The Fall and Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan has said he quit social media because of the "disgusting things" people said about his private life.
The Associated Press reports that during interviews for his two new films, Anthropoid and The 9th Life of Louis Drax, Dornan was asked about his decision to leave social media.
"To be honest, I was very inactive on it in the last year," he replied.
"To delete my Instagram... I had to email my publicist to get the password. Twitter I used to have a bit of fun with back in the day but I think I've tweeted twice in the last year."
"The more public interest in you, the more horrible people become," Dornan said. "People start to say disgusting things about your family, about your children. What's the point?"
Both of Dornan's new films will be released next month.
Directed by Alexandra Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Switchblade Romance), The 9th Life of Louis Drax is a supernatural thriller based on the Liz Jensen bestseller of the same name. Dornan plays Dr Allan Pascal, who tries to get to the bottom of a case involving a young boy. The film is out in cinemas on September 2.
Directed by Metro Manila filmmaker Sean Ellis and co-starring Cillian Murphy, Anthropoid tells the true story of Operation Anthropoid - the mission to kill SS head Reinhard Heydrich, known as "The Butcher of Prague", and right-hand man to Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler.
Dornan and Murphy play the real life Jan Kubis and Josef Gabcík, the soldiers from Czechoslovakia's army-in-exile who were sent to assassinate the Nazi general. Anthropoid is in cinemas from September 9.
Later this year, Dornan will return to the small screen as Paul Spector in series three of serial killer thriller The Fall.
"You can expect the unexpected," he told the Associated Press. "There's quite remarkable turns in the third season that I really genuinely think people won't see coming that are hugely exciting."
Next February sees the release of the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, with Fifty Shades Freed following in February 2018.
