Ricky Gervais has said he will have to kill off his iconic comedy character David Brent "soon".

The Office star Brent makes his big screen debut next week in David Brent: Life on the Road, which sees the hot air merchant trying to hit the big time with his band, Foregone Conclusion.

When asked by British entertainment magazine Radio Times if he would ever kill Brent off, Gervais replied: "I don't know. Never say never, but I'll have to kill him off soon."

Among Brent's most (in)famous quotes in The Office was: "You know that old thing, live fast, die young? Not my way. Live fast, sure - live too bloody fast sometimes - but die young? Die old."

Before he became a household name with Brent, comedian Gervais worked in an office for seven years and was in a new wave duo called Seona Dancing.

"I see a lot of him [Brent] in me, but also in others over the years," Gervais told the magazine. "We all want to be loved, to think we're popular and respected, to be thought of as interesting.

"And we're all prats sometimes, with egos we have to curb. I say if you don't know who the David Brent is in your office, it's you."
