Rebel Wilson has landed the lead in a new female-led reboot of the classic comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

The original 1988 film starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine as two con men trying to swindle a heiress out of her money.

According to Variety, the new version will see Wilson and another female scam artist, one low rent and the other high class, compete to deceive a guileless technology prodigy out of his fortune.

Jac Schaeffer (The Shower) wrote the screenplay, with Roger Birnbaum and Wilson producing the project.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the latest hit Hollywood movie to be remade with female casts, following hot on the heels of Paul Feig's Melissa McCarthy-starring Ghostbusters reboot.

There is also an Ocean's Eleven spin-off starring Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling and Helena Bonham Carter in the works.

Pitch Perfect star Wilson is also attached to star in a remake of the Goldie Hawn movie Private Benjamin.
