Actor and TV presenter Christopher Biggins has been removed from the Celebrity Big Brother house for making comments that were judged to be "capable of causing great offence".

Explaining its decision in a statement, Channel 5, which broadcasts Celebrity Big Brother in the UK, said: "Since entering Big Brother, he has made a number of comments capable of causing great offence to housemates and the viewing public."

Channel 5 did not reveal the comments that led to Biggins' removal but said it "does not tolerate offensive language capable of causing widespread offence".

Earlier this week viewers saw Biggins having a conversation with Mob Wives star Renee Graziano about homosexuality and bisexuality during which he said people needed to "pick a team".

Biggins' departure from the show comes ahead of the first eviction with DJ James Whale and TV presenter Anthea Turner's ex-husband Grant Bovey facing the public vote.

Two other housemates, Ex on the Beach's Stephen Bear and singer Aubrey O'Day, have received warnings from Celebrity Big Brother about their behaviour. O'Day spat in Bear's sandwich, with Bear throwing a mug against a wall after a row with rapper Heavy D.

The show was mired in controversy earlier this year following former contestant Winston McKenzie's comments about homosexuality.

The political activist was not removed from the house by Channel 5 but was evicted after three days by his fellow housemates who expressed their disgust at McKenzie's views on gay people.
