Ralf Little has spoken of his sadness that his Royle Family co-star Caroline Aherne will not see his new Channel 5 show, Borderline.

The 36-year old actor, who played Antony Royle in the popular series, is executive producer of the new mockumentary Borderline. The series concerns the working lives of a bunch of chaotic security officers at the fictional Northend Airport.

“She was my mentor – I learned everything I know from her, " the actor told the Sunday People. "She kick-started my career.” Little reputedly quit studies at Manchester Medical school to concentrate on his acting career.

The Royle Family offered him his first big break in the original series which ran from autumn 1998 to December 2000 and intermittently thereafter in various 'specials.' The actor also played Jonny Keogh in the first six series of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

“I have never got to show her this, which is really sad, " declared the actor of his new comedy series. "I wish I would have had a chance. She was always very supportive. I’d always get a text from her saying well done, if she liked it. Sometimes she’d go ‘It wasn't my cup of tea.’ She didn't mess about. That’s why everyone loved her."

Caroline texted Little when his previous show The Café first appeared on TV screens.  "‘Love the show, our kid. Well done.’ I thought that was amazing. " The actor played Richard Dickens in that 2011 comedy series which he co-wrote with Michelle Terry

52-year old Aherne passed away on July 2 at her home in Timperley, England following a battle with cancer.

“It’s hard to imagine anyone who has had more of an impact on my life, " Little declared of the iconic actress. "I was just a 17-year-old skinny kid when I turned up on The Royle Family. It was the start of something amazing.”

Speaking today on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch, Little further declared that Aherne was as much of an influence on him as his parents. He said that if it wasn't for the actress and writer, he would not be doing what he does.

"From the outbreak of support on social media, it was really clear the profound effect her work had on everyone. Her gift was making people laugh and she was really forthcoming with it."

Borderline begins on Channel 5 next Tuesday at 10pm. It is reported that Little will also star in the new Doctor Who series, although the actor has been tight-lipped about the matter.
