Zayn Malik has revealed why he thinks his relationship with Gigi Hadid works so well....it's down to their matching intellect.

The former One Direction star gave a wide-ranging interview Elle UK that covered his insecurities since leaving the boyband, his desire to try acting and his attitude to social media (clue: he's not a fan).

The Pillowtalk star, who was previously engaged to Little Mix's Perrie Edwards, cast Hadid in his debut music video and the pair soon began dating. He told the magazine that the reason why his relationship with the supermodel works is because "She's super intelligent, I think that's why it works so well."

The high-profile couple have captured the attention of fans around the world since revealing their relationship, and regularly post pictures of one another on Instagram.

However, Malik has admitted that he'd prefer to banish social media from their lives, saying: "If I had a choice I would take the camera off everyone's iPhone and make sure we didn't have Twitter or Facebook.

"It affects art form. There's something to be said about living in the moment. I try to keep my phone for calls."

Malik also spoke about his decision to leave global phenomenon One Direction, saying it allowed him to discover more about himself, "mostly how in love with music I still was".

He also admitted that he still struggles with self-confidence issues.

"At that time in my life I felt I had done everything I could do there and I just needed to change it up. It didn't feel brave. I just don't have it in me to feel fully secure in anything I do.

"I always strive towards something better. It's why I think sometimes I come across the wrong way, a bit distant", he said. "I'm just stressed out trying to control how I'm perceived. I think about things a lot."

The singer added that his solo album Mind of Mine was the result of  "a build-up of six years and never being able to express what I wanted to say. I had something to get off my chest".
