Dublin Buskers are calling for a boycott of the permit system in protest at the ban on amplification in Temple Bar.

The Dublin City Buskers group says new bye-laws due to come into effect on August 1 will not be reviewed until September and the ban on amplification in Temple Bar will remain in place.

Bobby Coyne, a spokesperson for the buskers group, says buskers fear that further restrictions on amps in Grafton St and Henry St will be then be introduced.

Around 470 street performers have paid €60 for a permit, with many paying an additional €30 for an amplification permit.

The buskers' group is now calling on their members not to pay any more money to the city council while the amplification ban remains in Temple Bar Square.

This was added to the new regulations by a vote of councillors at their July meeting.

The city council has had many complaints and submissions particularly from city centre residents and businesses calling for a total ban on amplification.

Dublin city councillors have voted to ban street performers from using backing tracks but have rejected calls for a complete ban on amplification.
