A film production company has pleaded guilty at Milton Keynes Magistrates' Court to two health and safety breaches after Harrison Ford was crushed by a hydraulic door while filming the latest Star Wars film.

The 74-year-old actor, who plays Han Solo in the sci-fi series, broke his leg in June 2014 while filming scenes on the set of the Millennium Falcon at Pinewood Studios in the UK. The actor later underwent surgery for his injury.

Ford was airlifted to hospital after he was crushed by the giant spaceship prop, which was compared to the "weight of a small car".

Britain's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) brought four criminal charges against Foodles Production (UK) Ltd, a subsidiary company of Disney, because of alleged breaches of health and safety legislation.

The production company admitted two breaches under health and safety law in court on Tuesday, and will be sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court on August 22.

Harrison Ford and J.J. Abrams

Production on Star Wars: The Force Awakens was shut down for three weeks after Ford's injury, and director J.J. Abrams later admitted the time off allowed him to rework the script.

During a Tribeca Film Festival interview in New York, he revealed, "I was on the set of the Millennium Falcon, and we started working with (characters) Rey and Finn the first time we did it, it didn't work at all as we wrote it. They were much more contentious.

"I didn't direct it right. It was set up all wrong. And when Harrison Ford got injured, which was a very scary day, we ended up having a few weeks off. And it was during that time that I really got to look at what we had done and rethink it, and then rewrite quite a bit of that relationship.

"So when we went back to work again, we actually just re-shot those scenes from the ground up, and it was an amazingly helpful thing to get these two characters to where they needed to be."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has taken in more than $2 billion worldwide, with production of Star Wars: Episode VIII currently under way in the same studio. It is scheduled for release in December 2017.
