It has been revealed that Sylvester Stallone will appear in the upcoming sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy.

The casting news was announced at San Diego Comic-Con when Marvel premiered some footage from the film.

Stallone made a brief appearance in the teaser and while it is not yet known what kind of a part he has to play, director James Gunn told the audience it will be "significant."

"It's a very, very key, important role. It's not a huge role. He's a great and key supporting actor," Gunn said.

Stallone is the latest star linked to the project, with Kurt Russell recently announced as playing Chris Pratt's on-screen father.

Taking to Facebook to share news that Russell would play Ego, Peter Quill aka Star Lord's dad, Gunn said, "My favourite movie as a small child was The Strongest Man in the World, so I'm glad to announce that, yes, Kurt Russell has joined our cast and, yes, he is more awesome a dude than I ever could have imagined."

Filming has already wrapped on the movie, with it set to hit cinemas in May 2017.
