Northern Irish rockers Ash are to be recognised for their contribution to music at a special awards ceremony in Belfast in the autumn.

The punk/power pop three-piece from Downpatrick - who have performed with the likes of U2 - will receive the Oh Yeah Legend Award at the Mandela Hall on November 11. Previous recipients of the award include the Divine Comedy, Therapy?, Stiff Little Fingers and The Undertones.

Charlotte Dryden, chief executive of Belfast's Oh Yeah Music Centre, said: "Ash have played a major part in the story of Northern Irish music....Our centre is named after the very song which features on their debut album, 1977. How brilliant to finally honour and celebrate the band with an Oh Yeah Legend Award."

Formed in 1992, Ash have had three top 10 albums and 20 top 40 singles in Ireland and have sold more than eight million records worldwide. Their music has also featured on numerous film soundtracks and video games, including A Life Less Ordinary.

Frontman Tim Wheeler won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Pop Song in 2001 for Ash's hit song Shining Light.

The band will shortly be embarking on a tour to mark the twentieth anniversary of 1977 including dates at Dublin's Olympia Theatre on November 10 and Belfast's Mandela Hall on November 11.

Speaking about the upcoming shows, Ash said: "Some of these songs have grown with us throughout those years; others have the ability to transport us mentally and emotionally back to that crazy formative year of 1995 to 1996.These gigs are going to be a trip, trip, trip!”
