The epic fantasy drama is up for the coveted best drama nomination, while The People v. O.J. Simpson, was close behind with an impressive 22 nods. Fargo sails into third place with 18 nods.

There were several familiar faces in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series section with Claire Danes (Homeland), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Taraji P Henson (Empire) and Robin Wright (House of Cards) all getting a nod, while Keri Russell finally received recognition for her role in Cold War drama The Americans. One shock was the omission of Julianna Margulies, who was expected to get a nod for the final season of The Good Wife.

There weren't any surprises in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category, with Kyle Chandler being recognised for Netflix's murky thriller Bloodline, Bob Odenkirk taking a nod for his leading turn in the Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul and Hollywood powerhouse Kevin Spacey being nominated for acclaimed political drama House of Cards. Newcomer Rami Malek, who puts in a unique turn in Mr. Robot, Live Schreiber (Ray Donovan) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans) round off the nominee list.

The contenders of the Outstanding Drama Series were as expected with FX's spy drama The Americans, Better Call Saul, Julian Fellowes' period drama Downton Abbey, HBO fantasty drama House of Cards, Showtime's terrorist drama Homeland. The Kevin Spacey-starring House of Cards and much-loved series Mr. Robot were all among the nominees.

In the Limited Series sections Fargo and American Crime featured highly, with Kirsten Dunst and Felicity Huffman getting nods for their roles, as did Sarah Paulson for her part in The People v OJ Simpson.

It's just as competitive for the men, with Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Bryan Cranston (All The Way), Ibris Alba (Luther) and Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager) in the mix, as are The People V OJ Simpson duo, Cuba Gooding Jr and Courtney B. Vance.

In the Outstanding Comedy Series category we have Aziz Ansari's Netflix comedy drama Master of None, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,  Jeffrey Tambor's touching series Transparent, HBO's Silicon Valley and Veep, ABC's sitcom Black-ish and long-running mockumentary-style comedy Modern Family.
