Singer Chaka Khan has revealed that she is entering rehab for "a dependence on prescription pain medications" and will have to cancel some of her scheduled concerts.

The 63-year old Grammy-winner told the Associated Press that she had been "battling an addiction to the same medication that led to Prince's death" and that his death formed part of her decision to seek help.

Prince was found dead at his Minnesota home on April 21. An autopsy found he died of an overdose of fentanyl, a strong opioid painkiller.

Khan said she has "voluntarily entered the programme to get healthy and stay that way".

The statement also declared that the singer has "struggled with a dependence on prescription pain medications" and that "doctors have urged her to resume recording mid-July."

She is expected to resume her tour on August 1.
