Game of Thrones season seven will air later in 2017 than anticipated, and we have winter finally arriving to blame for the delay.
The usual nine month wait between Game of Thrones seasons is long enough but it's looking like there'll be an even longer gap between seasons six and seven.
In the season six finale, The Winds of Winter, winter officially arrived after years of hearing that it was on the way. Now that it's finally here, the showrunners have decided to push filming back to a later stage because it wouldn't suit to film in the sunshine if it's supposed to be a cold, harsh winter on the show.
It makes sense, but after that finale it's going to sting to have to wait longer than expected to find out what happens next in Westeros.
"We don't have an air date yet, but this year will probably be a little bit later," showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed on a UFC Unfiltered podcast.
"We're starting a bit later because at the end of the season, 'Winter is here' – and that means that sunny weather doesn't really serve our purposes any more. So we kind of pushed everything down the line so we could get some grim grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot."
