Rob Lowe is joining CBS’ Code Black as the hit US medical drama’s new co-lead.

The 52-year-old actor, fresh off his one-season run on Fox’s The Grinder, will play Colonel Ethan Willis, a doctor in the US Military’s prestigious Combat Casualty Care research program.

Willis has been pulled out of a combat hospital in Afghanistan and embedded at Angels Memorial to teach staff about what the military has learned in the field of combat medicine.

His aggressive, rule-breaking style is greeted enthusiastically by  ER Residency Director Dr Leanne Rorish (Marcia Gay Harden), but not by all the other doctors.

Code Black focuses on the fictional Angels Memorial Hospital, where four first-year residents and their colleagues tend to patients in an understaffed, extremely busy emergency room that lacks sufficient resources.

Lowe is making the switch from comedy after several years on Parks and Recreation and The Grinder, and previously starred in ensemble dramas The West Wing and Brothers and Sisters.

Code Black will return to RTÉ One in the autumn.
