Apple reportedly in "exploratory talks" to takeover Jay Z's Tidal

Apple is reportedly considering a takeover bid for rapper Jay Z's music-streaming service Tidal.

The tech giant is exploring the idea of acquiring Tidal to bolster its music service because of Tidal's strong ties to popular artists such as Kanye West and Madonna.

Sources told the Wall Street Journal that the "exploratory talks" are on-going and may not result in a deal.

However, a spokesperson for Tidal denied that its executives have discussed a deal with Apple.

Jay Z bought the Tidal service in March 2015 for $56 million from Swedish company Aspiro, unveiling it as a rival to Spotify following criticism of the amount of royalties they pay to musicians.

In June, Kanye West used Tidal to unveil the controversial video for his latest single Famous, which features depictions of a group of naked celebrities, including Taylor Swift and Caitlyn Jenner.

The service also previously hosted exclusive releases from Rihanna and Jay Z's wife, Beyonce. It is also the only streaming service to offer the back catalogue of the late pop superstar Prince.

Tidal charges €19.99 a month for high-fidelity version of its 40 million-strong song catalogue or €9.99 a month for standard quality sound.

The service says it has 4.2 million paying subscribers.
