Laura Whitmore has missed out on a presenting role on the X Factor spin-off show - The Xtra Factor.

The 30-year-old was a hot favourite to take over as the new face of the show following her decision to hang up her jungle boots and quit I'm A Celebrity.

Whitmore had apparently impressed ITV bosses during a screen test and looked destined to follow in the footsteps of Caroline Flack who had also started out on I'm A Celebrity before moving onto The Xtra Factor and later nabbing a presenting gig on The X Factor alongside Olly Murs.

However today it was confirmed that BBC Radio 1 DJ and TV presenter Matt Edmondson had nabbed the plum gig and will take over from presenters Rochelle Humes and Melvin Odoom.

Speaking about his new role, 30-year-old Edmondson said, "I am unbelievably excited about joining The Xtra Factor this year, not least of all because on my first day Louis Walsh walked into my dressing room topless, unannounced.

"I regard this as the definition of 'living the dream,'" he added.

There were also rumours that 2FM presenter Nicky Byrne was also one of the names being considered for The Xtra Factor.

The Irish Mail on Sunday quoted a source back in May which said that, "A number of people are being considered for the position and Nick is on the list. He has plenty of experience on camera and has a great profile in England which is a real plus."

However it's understood that Nicky didn't travel to London for a screen-test due to his commitments with the Eurovision and the release of his debut solo album.

Mind you Nicky wasn't the only other Irish guy linked to the show. It was also rumoured that both the Voice of Ireland presenter Eoghan McDermott and fashion guru Darren Kennedy had been in the mix as possible replacements.

Meanwhile the X Factor roadshow will ride into town later this week with Croke Park hosting the Irish leg of the auditions. All four judges - Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh, Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell - are expected to be in attendance on Friday. Smaller scale auditions were held in April at the 3Arena.
