U2, who used EU iconography and emblems on their Zooropa album over 20 years ago, have urged voters in Britain and Northern Ireland to vote to remain in the EU in Thursday's Brexit referendum.

The band shared a video on its Facebook page from British Irish group Irish4Europe urging their fans to Stay (Faraway so close!).

They also posed a message saying, “We were asked to repost this video, we like it and we’re humbled to be in it. For Irish voters in Britain, don’t go we’d miss you… Europe without Britain seems unimaginable to us. Bono, Edge, Adam, Larry.”

Liam Neeson has also added his voice to a growing number of celebrities appealing for a Remain vote on the eve of Thursday's referendum on membership of the European Union.

“I would like to lend my voice to Irish4Europe’s campaign to encourage Irish citizens to vote for the UK to remain in the EU," the Ballymena man said.

I fill find you, and I will kill you if you vote to leave

“A UK exit would have the worst ramifications for the island of Ireland. Economically, this would be a backwards step for Ireland.

“Border controls would be implemented to allegedly stop illegal immigrants coming into the UK through the back door. Trade will be enormously impacted. It would be truly a shame to sacrifice all the progress that has been made by the peace process regarding border controls. There is strength in unity. A Brexit vote will make us weak. I urge you to go out and vote to remain in the EU," he added.

Last week Bob Geldof was involved in a bizarre clash with UKIP leader Nigel Farage on the River Thames. Farage had led a flotilla of vessels along the river in protest at fishing policies set by Brussels but was met by a rival fleet from the remain side headed by Captain Bob.

Addressing Farage over the PA system, Geldof said: "You are no fisherman's friend", adding that "You are a fraud, Nigel. Go back down the river because you are up one without a canoe or a paddle."

Farage responded by saying, "It's all very well for millionaires, Bob."

The UK Brexit vote takes place tomorrow with polls suggesting that the referendum outcome is still too close to call.
