Singer Meat Loaf is in a stable condition in hospital after collapsing during a concert in Edmonton, Canada on Thursday night. His illness has been blamed on severe dehydration.

A statement posted on Meat Loaf's Facebook page read: "His vital signs are stable and normal - additional tests are being performed but he is responsive and recovering well.

"He extends his heartfelt thanks for everyone's support and well wishes, and is expecting a speedy and full recovery."

Meat Loaf was performing his hit I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) at the Northern Jubilee Auditorium when he fell to the floor and was attended to by bandmates.

The Alberta Health Service said it had brought a patient from the Northern Jubilee Auditorium to an Edmonton Hospital but did not give further details.

The rock legend, born Marvin Lee Aday, had cancelled shows in Canada earlier this week due to illness and has suffered from health problems in the past. He collapsed during shows in London in 2003 and in Pittsburgh in 2011.

Meat Loaf is one of the most successful rock singers of all time with his seminal 1977 album Bat Out of Hell selling over 43m copies.

He is also an actor whose screen credits include The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Wayne's World, Fight Club and Glee
