The first trailer for the new Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy-starring WWII thriller Anthropoid has been released, and it looks every bit as gripping as their hit TV series, The Fall and Peaky Blinders.

The film, from acclaimed Metro Manila director Sean Ellis, tells the true story of Operation Anthropoid - the mission to kill SS head Reinhard Heydrich, known as "The Butcher of Prague", and right-hand man to Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler.

Dornan and Murphy play the real life Jan Kubis and Josef Gabcík, the soldiers from Czechoslovakia's army in exile who were sent to assassinate the Nazi general.

Anthropoid also stars Toby Jones, Harry Lloyd, Alena Mihulov, Bill Milner and another Irish actor, Sam Keeley.

Director Ellis has described bringing Anthropoid to the screen as a "14-year journey" and said it was "immensely humbling" to tell the story of the sacrifice of the men and women of the Czech resistance.

"In the Czech Republic, it is a story of great national pride and it's time to tell the world that story," he added.

Anthropoid will receive its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic next month. An Irish release date has yet to be announced.

It is one of two upcoming films about the plot to assassinate Heydrich; the other, HHhH, stars Wicklow actor Jack Reynor as Gabcik and Money Monster's Jack O'Connell as Kubis.

Cork actor Murphy is also voicing an Irish/Estonian animated co-production called The Overcoat, which has been adapted for the screen by Hugh O'Conor from the Nikolai Gogol short story.

Dublin company Giant Animation has begun production on the Sean Mullen and Meelis Arulepp-directed film, which tells the story of an office worker (Murphy) who saves up to buy a new coat for Christmas "only to have fate take a ghostly hand". The voice cast also includes Spider-Man's Alfred Molina and Game of Thrones' Michael McElhatton.

The Overcoat has been supported by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, RTÉ and the Estonian Film Institute.
