Little Britain star Matt Lucas is to reprise his role as duffel-coated misfit Nardole in the new series of Doctor Who.

Filming on the 10th season begins in Cardiff next week with Lucas describing himself as "chuffed to bits" about his return for a longer run.

He said he loved the experience of working with Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi on the 2015 Christmas special, The Husbands of River Song, and was excited to work with newcomer Pearl Mackie, who plays the Doctor's latest assistant, Bill.

The show's lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, said he was "slightly amazed" that Lucas was back on the show.

"This time it's not just for Christmas, he's sticking around," he continued. "One of the greatest comedy talents on planet Earth is being unleashed on all of time and space."
