Navan man and former James Bond, Pierce Brosnan is returning to television for the first time since 1988 to take the lead role in US drama series The Son, in which he will play uncompromising Irish-American patriarch Eli McCullough.
Brosnan rose to fame in 1982 with his starring role in comedy drama Remington Steele and was last seen in a TV series in 1988 when he starred in Noble House.
Deadline reports that 63-year-old Brosnan will replace Omagh-born actor Sam Neill who had been cast in the role of McCullough but left for personal reasons.
The Son is described as an epic tale, spanning several generations, about America’s birth as a superpower as seen through the bloody rise and fall of Texan family, the McCulloughs.
The Son tells the story of how Eli McCullough was kidnapped and raised among the Comanche Native American tribe when he was a child. He grows up to apply the brutal Comanche philosophy to his business dealings.
In the series, which is based on the book by Philipp Meyer, Eli is born on the day Texas becomes an independent Republic in 1836 and he earns the nickname First Son of Texas. However, he is uncomfortable with what he sees as the “taming” of Texas and the uncertain future of his legacy.
Brosnan recently completed filming The Foreigner with Jackie Chan and Brosnan also stars in the upcoming thriller I.T.
