John Boyega says he is "very excited" about his leading role in Pacific Rim 2 and announced he will also be co-producing the movie.

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens star will play the son of Idris Elba's character, Stacker Pentecost, who was killed off in the original 2013 film.

The movie's storyline has been kept under wraps, but the first film centred on a team of heroes battling giant sea creatures

The project will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight following original filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's departure earlier this year.

Taking to Twitter, the 24-year-old actor expressed his delight at being cast in the movie, along with announcing that he will co-produce the project.

Del Toro will produce alongside Boyega, Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and executive producer Cale Boyter.

“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men,” said Parent.

del Toro added: “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
