Irish actress Saoirse Ronan has joked that she sounds like Tom Waits when she speaks now as her Broadway debut in The Crucible is making her lose her voice.
"My voice is gone, I sound like Tom Waits right now, I basically sound like Tom Waits all the time on stage," she told Good Morning America.
When asked about making the move from the silver screen to the Broadway stage, Ronan said she finds theatre to be a lot more physical in terms of her performance.
"Everything is so minimal, or it should be, I think, with film if you've got a camera right there. With theatre, it does need to be more physical and because of that, then the stamina you need to keep that up, every single day, six days a week is much greater," she said.
The Oscar nominated actress plays Abigail in the production of the Arthur Miller classic and she previously described her character as "the worst" but now understands her motivations.
"To begin with, in the play everything is sort of taken away from her... And so I think she's one of those people who is sort of desperate for a purpose and authority and things like that. So I think that drives her to do what she does," Ronan added.
The Crucible runs at the Walter Kerr Theater in New York City until July 17.
